1. Prepare

Great news, you secured an interview! Now you need to prepare for your online interview.
Test your technology. Ensure your computer has the correct software installed, your camera and microphone are set up and conduct a practice call with a friend or family member to make sure everything works as it should.
Think about your background. Position your device in an area with a professional looking, uncluttered background, away from distraction or windows that may impact lighting.
Don’t leave your profile photo blank, use a smart photo of yourself - not a selfie!
Check your internet connection is stable.
Place sticky notes by your webcam to remind you of any important talking points.
Try recording yourself and play it back, you may see more clearly how you will appear to the interviewer this way.

2. What to wear?

As with a face-to-face interview, wearing a professional outfit sets the right impression. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so wearing something you would wear in person to an interview is advised.
Also, don’t just dress your top half and wear jogging bottoms; your interviewer might not know but you will feel it!
Keep your look simple and professional.

3. Timing

Make sure everything is set up at least 15 minutes before your interview time, and don’t join the call late, 5 minutes early should do the trick!
Have everything you may need to hand, notes, CV, pen and paper, perhaps a list of questions or prompts that may help you throughout the interview.
Remove any distractions so you can be fully engaged with the interviewer.
Eliminate any background noises, close windows in case noise develops during your call

4. Practice

Practice with a friend or family member, get them to ask questions over a video call and give you feedback on how you look, come across and whether you can improve anything.
Make sure you research the company, this will help make you stand out from the competition.
Speak clearly as sound can often be an issue when two people are talking at the same time, learn to take turns.
Be aware of your tone, facial expressions and posture.
Talk slowly and don’t rush your answers. This will also give the impression of confidence.

5. The Interview

You’re now ready to go!
Think of your interview the same as meeting the person face-to-face. Make eye contact as this will show you are paying attention.
Don’t be afraid to ask for a question to be repeated, it is always better to clarify.
Be straightforward – review the job description and explain how you fit into this and will benefit the company.
Stay professional – it’s easy to feel too relaxed in your home environment, remember to be friendly and professional at all times.
Try to remain calm and confident, remember that a lot of people feel awkward and uncomfortable on video. It is very likely your interviewer is as nervous as you!
Don’t switch screens on your computer, make sure you have everything you need printed out.

6. Follow Up

Send a brief email follow up, to thank the interviewer and state your interest in the position. This should be sent ideally shortly after the interview, don’t leave it days!
You can also ask if the recruiter would like further references or work samples that may help them with their decision.
Following up will also help keep you in the forefront of their mind.

If you are prepared and remain professional, you are bound to make a good impression and stand out from other candidates.
